Clare Winslow is a Washington, DC–based artist whose work investigates the shifting nature of time, perception, and memory. Working across painting and printmaking, she creates layered abstractions that emerge through slow accumulation, tonal variation, and a deliberate interplay of surface and depth.
Rooted in sustained observation of the natural world, her work reflects on the quiet structures that shape lived experience. Each piece is built through an intuitive yet rigorous process—emphasizing transitions in light, texture, and rhythm. Artist Statement
An artist doesn’t need to wait for inspiration to create meaningful and impactful work. Even so, I draw creative energy from the natural world, memory, and my emotional responses to both current and past events. Making art allows me to find perspective amid anxiety and disruption—a way of grounding myself in uncertain times.
In my recent paintings, I’m drawn to the idea of harmonic drift—a visual and emotional rhythm that emerges in the space between stillness and movement, presence and change. Each piece reflects a personal attempt to navigate complexity through slow, layered processes. My work embraces impermanence, reminding us that transformation—though often disorienting—is a vital and universal force.
Ultimately, I hope these paintings offer viewers a quiet space to breathe, reflect, and reconnect—with themselves, with each other, and with the shifting world we all share.
